9/11 VIRTUAL TRIBUTES

Written by on September 11, 2020

It’s been 19 years since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Somehow it seems like it was more recent than 19 years ago, and at the same time it seems longer ago. It is heartbreaking to remember and has changed a lot of our daily lives. This year, the pandemic has changed so much in our lives, including how we remember 9/11. There will be a few in-person events but many that you can stream online. There are plans for tributes at all three sites: New York, the Pentagon and the field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The Flight 93 memorial near Shanksville will be different this year. The names of the 40 people killed there would be read, but by one person instead of multiple family members. President Trump is planning to visit this morning and presidential hopeful, former Vice President Joe Biden plans a visit this afternoon.

The Stephen Stiller Tunnel to Towers Foundation will hold an in-person ceremony where victims’ relatives can recite names at Ground Zero while keeping a safe distance.
The 9/11 Memorial and Museum has had virtual tours available and will have a livestream available for their annual commemoration ceremony.

The New York City Fire Museum’s 9/11 Wreath Laying Ceremony at the FDNY 343 Memorial will stream this morning at 8am central HERE.

Military leaders will conduct the Pentagon’s ceremony without victims’ families in attendance, and names will be recited by a recording. Victims’ relatives can visit the Pentagon’s memorial in small groups later Friday.
