GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT – WHY AND HOW I QUIT
Written by Ballzer on November 20, 2025
The Great American Smokeout is the third Thursday of November every year and encourages people to quit smoking, vaping, or other tobacco. It’s a day to make a plan to quit, either for just 24 hours or for good. The American Cancer Society provides resources and support to help people quit.
Maybe it’s a little late in the morning for today to be the day you go without a smoke, that’s okay. You can go the rest of the day, or tomorrow, or next Tuesday. Whenever it is, it’s worth it. YOU are worth it.
But Ballzer, you don’t know how hard it is to quit smoking! The #@*! I don’t. It’s super tough. I smoked for longer than I’d like to admit and I loved every single cigarette I ever smoked. I’d been thinking I should get serious about quitting for a while then finally did it earlier this year.
However works best for you is great. I always figured each time I didn’t smoke when I would have was a step in the right direction. I’d successfully cut back to one a day or every other day but never fully committed to being done until this year.
Do I miss it? Absolutely. But do I regret quitting? No. There is so much more I want to live for and not smoking will definitely increase my chances of enjoying life longer.
If today is your day, good luck and congrats on making that choice! If not, maybe make today the day you start a plan to quit. Or smoke less, or seek help. Wherever you are in your journey, I send you love and strength. It’s gonna suck (honestly, it still sucks) but making a commitment to yourself and loved ones feels pretty good.
You got this. If I can do it, you definitely can do this <3
