HOT WEATHER MUSIC

Written by on August 26, 2020

My ideal perfect day is about 63 degrees and partly cloudy with light breeze. I like to be able to wear a sweatshirt, or socks and shoes without sweating profusely like a greasy ham. The temperature has been in the 90’s this week- hopefully for the last time this summer- and I have HATED every second of it.

Normally on steamy hot days, I like to stay inside and sit in front of the air conditioner. But when I must leave the apartment to go to work or to get food (because those are the only 2 good reasons to leave my apartment right now), music selection is crucial. The right song can almost play to the haze and heat, and turn a 90 degree day into a unique vibe. Here are some of my favorite hot day songs.

Sleepyhead by Passion Pit

I first discovered this song in the backseat of an Uber in Los Angeles, so I attribute this track to a sunset on Manhattan Beach….. that’s tough to beat. This song’s whimsical chimes and thick synth play especially well to a hot sunny day, especially turned up loud with the windows down.

Still Beating by Mac Demarco

I often feel like a maniac in the summer heat, so I need a song to mellow me out and help me relax (even when I’m drowning in my own sweat). I could listen to this guitar groove 100x in a row and not get sick of it. You don’t even need to know the words- just smile and hum along!

Perfectly Lonely by John Mayer

John Mayer is MY GUY, but my mind and ears don’t crave his music when it’s 95 degrees outside. A lot of his music is quiet and mellow- this song is kinda an outlier. Perfectly Lonely is an homage to early 1970’s California country: The Eagles, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Poco etc. (all dope bands and artists that you should also listen to). I am also convinced that Harry Styles had this song in mind when he recorded Adore You– the guitar is superrrrrr similar.

Feels Like Summer by Childish Gambino

This is the greatest hot summer day song every recorded. The song sounds hazy! The beat and instruments are drippy with reverb and delay, giving it a dog-days-of-summer feel. Next time you have some free time in the afternoon, throw on some headphones and walk around in the sun while listening. Super cool experience.
