PREVENT FALLS, GET FREE COFFEE WITH MUGS FOR RUGS
Written by Ballzer on March 31, 2026
There’s still time to be rewarded for removing potential tripping and fall hazards from homes in our community. The La Crosse and Onalaska Fire Departments are teaming up with Emplify Health by Gundersen for the third annual Mugs for Rugs program, where people can turn in throw rugs at local coffee shops in exchange for a free coffee mug willed with the local house brew.
Molly McCormick, Community Risk Educator with the La Crosse Fire Department, came in to talk about the program, how to get a free coffee with your mug, how the rugs are upcycled, and more:
April and the crew at The Downtown Grounds are also hooking you up with extra goodies on the corner of 4th and Jay:

There are eight coffee shops in the area that are partnering with Emplify and the Fire departments this year. You can drop off rugs at the following locations through this week:
- Scooters Coffee, 715 2nd Ave SW, Onalaska
- Groovy Sips, 317 Sand Lake Rd, Onalaska
- Cozy Coffee, 515 Amy Dr. Suite #1, Holmen
- The Downtown Grounds (Formerly Cabin Coffee), 401 Jay St. Suite 100, La Crosse
- JavaVino, 2311 State Rd., La Crosse
- Dunkin, 1422 Losey Blvd S, La Crosse
- Grounded (Patio Café), 308 Main St., La Crosse
Molly also shared information on their Sound the Alarm program. They’re teaming up with Onalaska and Holmen FDs and the Red Cross to supply smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
