HOW TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Written by on March 8, 2021

The organizers of International Women’s Day hope this year’s theme — #ChooseToChallenge — “will inspire individuals to challenge biases, question stereotypes and celebrate the achievements of women around the world.”
Most years we would be attending events, festivals, marathons, and lots of other fun stuff. Obviously, we’re virtual this year but you can still get involved!

What is International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day began in 1911. It’s a “day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality.”

IWD sees a number of MISSIONS to help forge a gender equal world.
Celebrating women’s achievements and increasing visibility, while calling out inequality, is key.

This year’s campaign theme is: #ChooseToChallenge
The IWD page says, “A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day. We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.”

Participating in International Women’s Day on Social is easy!

Show you’re in and strike the Choose To Challenge pose and share on social media using #ChooseToChallenge #IWD2021.

The pose is simply raising your hand high to “show your commitment to choose to challenge inequality, call out bias, question stereotypes, and help forge an inclusive world,” according to their website.

Idina Menzel and Chaka Khan remade Chaka’s hit, “I’m Every Woman” to celebrate! They recorded the track for the global humanitarian organization CARE, as part of its #IMEVERYWOMAN International Women’s Day campaign. Learn more about the duet in their Today interview.

Also, Comedy Central Stand-Up‘s Facebook page has been celebrating women in comedy and I’ve been streaming it while working for almost two hours. I’d add the video here but… not surprisingly, some of the comics are probably NSFW if you don’t work where I do 😉
