HOW TO GET READY FOR GARDENING SEASON

Written by on March 31, 2021

We’ve had some warm days in the last few weeks which is helping to get us in the gardening mood. Bruce Bauer from Bauer’s Market & Garden Center in La Crescent shared some tips with Sam from Classic Hits 94.7 this week.

Bauer says some people have been sowing seeds indoors for a few weeks now and that’s a good place to start right now. You can start your floral seeds or vegetable plants early.

“About the second, third week in April, then one can prepare to do some outdoor things.”

What else can gardeners do in the spring to prepare? “Tilling the garden would come soon, in the next 10 days or so, as things dry up a bit. Some folks might want to go to the step of getting a soil sample taken. You can do that through the county extension service in downtown La Crosse.”

Those samples are sent to the University of Wisconsin – Madison to tell you what your soil is strong in, or deficient, like calcium or different fertilizer values so you can adjust accordingly if you’d like.

Bruce says, “If you want to just grow with what’s there, that’s great. Most soils are neutralized and good in that regard.” Gardeners can just fertilize as they grow them in the garden.

The biggest color trend for the 2021 Season? Bruce says the blue trend started late last season and will still be hot this year. “We’re going to have a wide variety of things in blues to satisfy those gardeners that want to be on that leading edge.”
