ENDURING FAMILIES PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS EARLY AFRICAN AMERICAN SETTLERS IN LA CROSSE AT JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION

Written by on June 4, 2021

Juneteeth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States on June 19th. This year, there will be a two day celebration including a free movie on Friday, June 18th, and a Community Fair in Riverside Park on Saturday, June 19th.

One of the many parts of the Saturday Celebration is reenactments from the Enduring Families Project. They’re a theatrical project, funded by the La Crosse County Historical Society, highlighting the history of African-Americans and other non-white settlers.

Actors will be at locations in downtown La Crosse sharing the stories of our history. We caught up with Denise Christy Moss, actor, producer, and co-founder of Enduring Families, to get all the information on their involvement in the event.

Last year, we helped them put on an audio tour to bring more attention to La Crosse’s rich history for the social distanced Juneteenth celebration. Actors were stationed in costume at the historic locations but you can still check it out HERE if you haven’t heard it yet.
