“Blue (Da Ba Dee)” Slaps and You Can’t Change My Mind

Columnist Tom West of the Minnesota newspaper, Morrison County Record, recently asked his readers what they thought were some of the “Dumbest” songs of all time. This list was aptly named, “The Bottom 20”, and had songs like “What Does The Fox Say” from Ylvis (Hard to defend that one) and “Bicycle Race” from Queen.

But one entry to the list has me puzzled. At number 16, the 1999 CLASSIC, “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” from Eiffel 65. In no way should this be classified as a dumb song.

The music video? Sure. It’s kinda dumb. But mostly due to the dated graphics. And the incredibly bad frosted tips the boys in Eiffel 65 decided to go with.

But it doesn’t matter where you put that song on, the car, a packed bar, a wedding, people will lose their minds! From the second that laser sound hits in the intro and on into the “Now listen up, here’s a story…”, everyone knows for the next three and a half minutes, they’re in for a good time.

So, the verdict? 1999’s “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” classified as a dumb song is an incredibly incorrect take. It’s a bop and forever will be a bop.
