Could TikTok Be Causing Tics in Teens?

For the last few years, it’s been pretty difficult to avoid mentions of the social media app TikTok and the cultural impact it’s created. You’ve probably lost at least 30 minutes of your day today, just scrolling through it’s “For You” page. I’m certainly guilty of just that.

A report from the Wall Street Journal has made claims that TikTok may be causing teen girls to develop “Tourette’s Syndrome-Like” tics.

German doctor, Dr. Kirsten Müller-Vahl, who’s treated Tourette’s patients for 25 years, has seen teen and young adult women come in with similar symptoms and seem to mimic characteristics of a German YouTuber that has Tourette’s Syndrome.

According to Yahoo News:

She told The Journal that it’s not likely to develop a tic by just watching one video but that TikTok’s algorithm means kids are seeing similar videos repeatedly.
